Lebanon Township heats with oil in more than half of its homes, and Readington and Tewksbury share that rural pattern of farmhouses and old mill villages, far from most gas mains.

Subdivisions from the 1970s to the 1990s
From Bridgewater and Hillsborough to Voorhees and Gloucester, these townships grew with tract houses and townhouses between the 1970s and the 1990s. Here a fireplace is most often a listed metal unit boxed into a framed chase.

Older city blocks
Somerville and the Hudson County cities of Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City and West New York hold our oldest close-packed housing. About half of Somerville predates 1960, and New Jersey's chimney verification form still offers a box for a flue with no liner.

Trolley-line suburbs
Haddonfield, Collingswood and Bloomfield took shape along early streetcar lines. In the first two, roughly half of the homes are older than 1940, and a single brick stack often holds several flues.

Multi-family neighborhoods
Flemington, Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Passaic and Paterson are where multi-unit buildings dominate. About 57 percent of Flemington's homes share a building with another unit, so we deal with shared flues and duct runs more than single fireplaces.

Postwar towns
These towns filled in quickly from the 1940s to the 1980s. Manville is the sharpest case, with close to 43 percent of its housing built in the two decades after 1940, mostly short flues above basement furnaces.

Towns on the water
Bayonne, Elizabeth, Perth Amboy and Middletown Township border tidal water, so after a storm surge we look at basement furnaces and water heaters as well as at the start of each heating season.
