When one bedroom never gets warm or cool while the thermostat looks fine, the trouble is usually a single duct, squashed in the attic, separated at a joint or leaking into a crawlspace. We find that one piece and fix it.
One weak register
A furnace or air handler that runs normally but leaves one room short is pointing at the duct between them. In Bridgewater's split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, the usual suspects are a flex duct pressed flat under a joist, a boot that has slipped off the register box and a seam taped decades ago that now leaks into the attic. We open the run where it can be reached and repair the failed part.
Tracing the problem
Most duct systems fail one piece at a time, so replacing everything is rarely the answer. We start at the trunk and follow the branch to the weak room, checking each fitting and each length of flex, including crawlspace runs that another contractor may have stepped on.

Common failures
Flex duct flattens when it is squeezed between framing or knelt on during attic work. Sheet metal comes apart at its crimped ends when a house settles or when a run was hung loosely. Cloth duct tape dries out and peels, leaving the seam open long before the metal wears. The thermostat never shows any of this. You feel it as one room that will not keep up.
When a section has to be replaced
Some pieces are past repair, such as flex that has torn, metal that has rusted through or a branch that was too small from the start. We replace that branch with new duct matched to what it connects to, seal every joint with mastic, add a clamp and hang it so it does not lie on other ducts. Normally that is one branch, and the rest of the system stays as it is.

Leaky seams waste more heated and cooled air than most homeowners guess. Fixing a crushed piece while leaving open joints on both sides only half solves the problem, so every joint we open is sealed again before we close up.
